Tuesday, August 1st, 2006There was a time at work when we had an accident with a Cheerleader; she was supposed to do round-off to two backhandsprings. She told the coach, with confidence, “I’m doing two backhandsprings; can you spot the second one?”
The coach, let’s call him David, stepped backward and was looking for the second backhandspring. She […]

Yesterday, I got into a conversation on tumble trak with an ex gymnast/ex college cheerleader and currently a cheer coach. I noticed immediately that she keeps her head in on her tumbling pass on tumble trak during her backhandsprings. I asked her where […]

When you bring your arms down fast when in the air, at […]

To Move Forward, Take a Step Back: How I got Roy to do a Round off Back-hanspring Tuck while others failed.
I had a student at a previous cheerleading gym I used to work for; let’s call him Roy. Roy was, I think 8 or 9 years old.
Roy was working his round off […]
Tumbling Drill/Progression: Use Barani to finish the Full-Twist

The following is an email I sent to a cheer gym owner about how I would teach the twisting direction according to the cheerleaders round off direction. Names have been deleted or changed to protect the guilty…I mean the innocent:

Front Tuck; “Punch Front”

Punch Front
Many coaches today have been teaching front tucks bo bring the feet directly underneath them on take off….on the punch, even when it’s coming from a fast run.
What the?
I say get your feet in front to get that linear momentum going upwards/vertical and arms up on the punch…..no Russian set.
