Program Patterns of Movement for Success: How Doing Round-off Backhandspring Rebound first before doing two backhandsprings in a row can help you succeed and prevent problems.

Tuesday, August 1st, 2006

There was a time at work when we had an accident with a Cheerleader; she was supposed to do round-off to two backhandsprings. She told the coach, with confidence, “I’m doing two backhandsprings; can you spot the second one?”
The coach, let’s call him David, stepped backward and was looking for the second backhandspring. She […]

Look between your hands: My “Default Settings” for backhandpsrings
Yesterday, I got into a conversation on tumble trak with an ex gymnast/ex college cheerleader and currently a cheer coach. I noticed immediately that she keeps her head in on her tumbling pass on tumble trak during her backhandsprings. I asked her where […]

Video: Mack’s Hollow Layout Drill
The most common technique for doing the lay-out is to bring arms up on rebound and then bring it down in front of the hips keeping arms straight, fingers extended. And it’s how I teach it.
When you bring your arms down fast when in the air, at […]

Going Long on the back tuck
I experienced one of those moments again. The Magic; the astonished facial expressions that cheerleaders can’t seem to hide.
She had been doing two back handsprings in a row to a back tuck. She asked me to spot the first few because she said that “sometimes, I […]

To Move Forward, Take a Step Back: How I got Roy to do a Round off Back-hanspring Tuck while others failed.
I had a student at a previous cheerleading gym I used to work for; let’s call him Roy. Roy was, I think 8 or 9 years old.
Roy was working his round off […]

She Went Long -One of Mack’s “Magical Moments”
We looked at each other. I said, “You’re always looking around and avoiding things.”
“I don’t know what to do,” she said.
“What do you need….What are you working on?”
“I need two backhandsprings.”
There had been a dead stop in everyone’s productivity. They’re getting tired.
I said, […]

Backhandsprings: Go Long!

Tuesday, July 11th, 2006

Go Long!.
So many cheerleaders never think about how they do their back handspring and the importance of making their backhandsprings longer.
Why make them long? Because you start to break form if you don’t. It’s also harder on your body. What happens is if you “undercut” you have to compensate, by wasting […]

Tumbling Drill/Progression: Use Barani to finish the Full-Twist

Monday, July 10th, 2006

Here’s a follow up for the previous private email to the cheer gym owner:
**************
Just to clarify:
In the last email we discussed:>…
The reason she likes to twist LEFT for someone who does a round off with a “Right Leg Lunge- Right hand down first” is because the right- leg- lunge -round-off is actually a left-twisting movement. […]

Cheer Tumbling/Gymnastics: The fastest cure to the undercut backhandspring. Trampoline drill
Ok.
I’ve been doing this for years….this drill; technique to get rid of the undercut backhandspring. And it works better than anything. But it works best with trampoline first.
Why?
Because it slows down the movement.
Here’s the cure:
Start the backhandspring with arms at HORIZONTAL!!!
That’s […]

Cheer Parents just don’t understand!
I was searching the net for cheer tumbling resources and I came accross a my space site by a cheer tumbling coach. He said he “hates cheer parents because they have no respect for progressions and they think their kid is the most talented” or something along those […]
